The Turning Point

No, not the Anne Bancroft/Shirely MacLaine movie about ballet

The movie Lying Time for Bonzo starring Chimpy. It is chock full of some of the best dialogue ever written:

On May 1, 2003, President Bush said “Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.”

On July 7, 2003, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith said: “This month will be a political turning point for Iraq.”

On July 22, 2003 the White House said “While there is still much work to do in Iraq, the Iraqi people can see progress each day toward a better and more prosperous future for their country.”

On November 6, 2003, President Bush observed: “We’ve reached another great turning point…”

On June 16, 2004, President Bush claimed: “A turning point will come two weeks from today.

On June 28, 2004, President Bush wrote on a napkin “Let freedom reign!”

On June 17, 2004 neoconservative columnist Max Boot said: “Despite the Negative Reaction by Much of the Media, U.S. Marines Did a Good Job in Fallujah, a Battle That Might Prove a Turning Point.”

On February 2, 2005, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld stated: “On January 30th in Iraq, the world witnessed an important moment in the global struggle against tyranny, a moment that historians might one day call a major turning point.”

On March 7, 2005 William Kristol wrote: “[T]he Iraqi election of January 30, 2005… will turn out to have been a genuine turning point.”

On May 30, 2005, Vice-President Cheney said on Meet The Press “The level of activity that we see today from a military standpoint, I think, will clearly decline. I think they’re in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency.”

On December 15, 2005 Senator Joe Lieberman said “The last two weeks have been critically important and I believe may be seen as a turning point in the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism.”

On December 18, 2005 Vice President Cheney, while conceding that “the level of violence has continued,” assured ABC News: “I do believe that when we look back on this period of time, 2005 will have been the turning point…”

On May 1, 2006 President Bush called the formation of a new Iraqi government “a turning point,” after hearing from Secretary of State Rice and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld about their weekend meeting with that country’s prime minister designate. (New York Times)

On May 20, 2006 President Bush said “We believe this is a turning point for the Iraqi citizens, and it’s a new chapter in our partnership.”

On June 9, 2006, President Bush said “Zarqawi’s death is a severe blow to al Qaeda. It’s a victory in the global war on terror, and it is an opportunity for Iraq’s new government to turn the tide of this struggle.”

On January 7, 2007, U.S. senators John McCain Joseph Lieberman recently returned from a fact-finding mission to Iraq. Both held extensive discussions with U.S. forces and Iraqi government officials. In light of a possible change in course for U.S. strategy in Iraq, they called the recent events a probable turning point.

On September 12, 2007, McCain observed that “the next six months are going to be critical.”

On March 17, 2008, McCain claimed that the U.S. had finally reached a genuine turning point in Iraq and that his faith in the surge was (once again) vindicated. “We are succeeding. And we can succeed and American casualties overall are way down. That is in direct contradiction to predictions made by the Democrats and particularly Senator Obama and Senator Clinton. I will be glad to stake my campaign on the fact that this has succeeded and the American people appreciate it.”

There have been so many turning points since 2003 that Linda Blair’s head would have fallen off by this time

The only turning point left is the left turn pointing to home.

  1. The real turning point? Let’s hope it’s November 4, 2008.

  2. For the last thirty years the country has been turning only to the right. If by some fluke the election is not stolen again, Obama will have to contend with the republicrats in his own party. They will be doing their best to keep him on the corporatist reservation. I worry that the democratic wing within the Democratic Party is in the minority. We desperately need a house cleaning from top to bottom. And that would require a landslide to even begin our turn to the left. Some priorities I see in making such a turn include weeding out K Street money and influence, and publicly funding campaigns and elections. Then there is the corporate media complex. We must turn the FCC around and restore the fairness doctrine. This is only the beginning. It’s a long way back home, folks.

  3. Awesome.

  4. Oh how well said.Turning point my ass- we turned and the only point has been downward.Let this hell be over soon.

  5. The Iraqis are now saying “No deal on your bases and occupation.” That’s a turning point! Now let’s just see it in the traditional media and make Bush keep his promise of “If the Iraqis ask us to leave, we’ll leave.”

  6. Echoing Unconventional Conventionist–I love that the Iraqis are claiming the US is failing to recognize their sovereignty. Oh Dr. FrankenChimpstein, your monster’s alive and kicking! And I hope he kicks you the hell out of his country, you asshole!

  7. great post….we need a turning point…actually two points…Nov2008 and then 1-20-08….great post you made me laugh…even when reading all of this…and remembering it…we have to end this regime…

  8. I long for the days when Bush took half the year to “vacation” at his rathole in Crawford.

  9. And each turning point was the American taxpayer being screwed yet again.

  10. Her head wouldn’t have fallen off. They would have awarded a no-bid contract to Halliburton for industrial-strength duct tape to plop her noggin back on the bloody stump. Hmm, sounds like Iraq!

  11. All we need is Father Malachi flicking a vile of Holy Water at the evil ones and saying. “I compel you to leave !”Yes, it’s going to be a long tough road home, but I’m up for it.

  12. The turning point that made all the rest of these possible, was made by Nancy Pelosi. “Impeachment Is Off The Table.”

  13. I have no confidence in our government at all. I honestly don’t expect things to get much better after 2008.

  14. Laughed my ass off-if it wasn’t so tragic it would be even funnier.

  15. More like as the Stomach Turns, the ongoing saga of the Bush Administration. But it is other’s making real turning point news this week – turning away from the Bush fatal folly– the Supremes says Gitmo prisoners have the right to go to court. (what took so damned long???). And the Iraqis just saying NO to the daunting contract Bush had on the table for long term presence, many bases & air space control. It was so generous for the US to have offered to run & dominate Iraq, which just happens to have the world’s 2nd largest oil reserve. The No Deal response is a real turning point.

  16. Forgive me for repeating this refrain, but impeachment cannot be accomplished with such a slim Democratic majority.Besides, it would be far better to go after Bush and his war criminal co-conspirators AFTER they leave office.I’m certain President Obama would not pardon them, and I think the world would love to see Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, ad nauseam behind bars. There is no statute of limitations on murder, revenge is a dish best served cold, yadda yadda, so I urge patience to all of us who want to see these criminals brought to justice.

  17. Right “en pointe”, dcap!

  18. these guys kept trying to string us along, keeping the American public pacified or trying to! They knew about what a mess it was. What liars these people are!
