Late Night Double Feature Picture Show

Michael Rennie was ill the day the earth stood still
But he told us where we stand

And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear

Claude Raines was the invisible man

Then something went wrong for Fay Wray and King Kong

They got caught in a celluloid jam

Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space

And this is how the message ran

Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1975

I love science fiction. My grandmother loved science fiction, so I used to watch it with her. The first Sci Fi show I remember (clearly) is the “Man Trap” episode of Star Trek – when Doctor McCoy’s girlfriend is really a salt sucking alien (sort of like Michelle Malkin).

I watch the same scifi movies over and over again. I have seen every episode of Star Trek TOS and TNG and Voyager (not DS9) 30 times. I am a dork.

Here are my favorite science fiction movies. Go ahead and yell at me for being a dork with no taste.

15. Things to Come remarkable for a 1936 movie, and holds up well
14. Robocop – I like this movie
13. Mad Max – considering cannot stomach Mel Gibson, I like this movie a lot
12. Colossus: The Forbin Project – one of those little seen gems.
11. War of the Worlds (1953) – not the incredibly crappy Tom Cruise remake
10. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan – still the best of the bunch, tho the whales one was pretty good also. I also like the ones with Malcolm McDowell and the Borg.
9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) – the 1978 remake was pretty good, the other 2 sucked, especially the Nicole Kidman version.
8. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) – not the incredibly crappy remake
7. Blade Runner – people like this more than I do, but I still like it
6. Aliens (1986) – I like 2 better than 1, 3 was ok, 4 I didn’t see
5. The Empire Strikes Back – sometimes I like this better than the original
4. The Terminator – I actually like 2 and 3, but they don’t compare
3. The Time Machine (1960) – not the incredibly crappy remake. I love this movie
2. Planet of the Apes (1968) – not the incredibly crappy remake.
1. Star Wars – still the best, and no frigging Ewoks.

Honorable Mention:
20 Million Miles to Earth
Alien
Andromeda Strain (1971)
Back to the Future
Forbidden Planet
Gattaca
Godzilla
(1954)
Jurassic Park
Logan’s Run
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
Soylent Green
Sunshine
Them
When Worlds Collide

Movies I just cannot sit through or am just thoroughly bored.

2001: A Space Odyssey – the most overrated movie ever
Brazil – I know, I am the only person on Earth who doesn’t like this movie
Close Encounters of the Third Kind – I HATE this movie
Contact – dull and ridiculous and so boring
Dune – really sucked
Event Horizon – again, people love this movie, I have watched it several times and it gets worse with each viewing, Aliens is far better
Independence Day – as I have said, I rooted for the aliens.
Man Who Fell to Earth, The – I know, a lot of people like this movie, and I love David Bowie – but not here.
Star Trek (1979) – one of the most boring movies ever made.
Starship Troopers – a really bad movie, even its campiness is unwatchable

ET – not science fiction, fantasy in my book

  1. I mostly go along with you but – here comes the except…I liked Stars Wars for a few minutes and then saw it for warmed over WWII fighter plane movies plus Lucas cannot write anything but cheese. I walked out half way through the first of the three latter stories. Didn't bother with the last two. Also got bored with Mad Max. The idea was far better than the film.Alien was genre bending. It definitely had the "Wow" factor. Also like Brazil.Invasion of the Body Snatchers – the original – possible the best sci fi ever.

  2. not a big sci-fi fan, but i did like star wars. i've actually seen most of the ones you list (i don't know why, because, like i said, not a sci-fi fan), but i don't really remember them very well. i guess it's because i wasn't overly impressed.

  3. I also like the Star Wars series, Robocop & Terminator, but I also enjoyed The 5th Element & Total Recall.

  4. Why not DS9?! I loved that one… maybe even best of all! When I was little, we lived in a house with a mirror in the dining room. On Friday nights, when my parents would go out and we'd have a babysitter, I'd sneak out of my room and hide under the dining room table. From where I sat, I could see the television – and Star Trek – perfectly in the mirror. I never outgrew it!

  5. I liked Terminator 2 and 1 was okay. But I also liked The Matrix trilogy. Seen most all of these films and I have to agree that the originals are better…not the incredibly crappy remake(s)

  6. Definitely, the Matrix. Now go fork over a small fortune and see Avatar. I promise you will not be disappointed.

  7. Oh! I forgot. One more movie. Tron.

  8. I really liked Mad Max but Gibson is a douchebag. The Time Machine was cool too. And I loved When Worlds Collide. Maybe I like the "end of the world" sci fi best.I couldn't get into 2001, but I really enjoyed 2010.

  9. great listings, man, although i absolutely hated blade runner. it's one of only two movies i've ever walked out on — and the other i left not because i hated it but because it hit too too close to home.completely agree about mad max. thank god for tina turner.also just absolutely loved the new star trek flick.

  10. I like most of the 50s originals. There are some in the 30s that are quite interesting.

  11. Hah, I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't like Brazil. I've seen it about three times now, and I still think…it's kind of dumb. If it was supposed to be as dystopian as everyone says, I'm sure as hell not seeing it. I also agree with you about 2001; very overrated, and if it's possible for a science fiction movie to be pretentious, 2001 is that movie. That said, the hands-down worst SF movie ever made is Dark Star. They oughtta recall every copy ever made, destroy them, and then torch the negatives, just out of shame. I like Star Treks IV and III better than II, although I realise that's a minority opinion. I just can't watch that Ceti eel scene without cringing, and I absolutely love the lines, "I! Have had! Enough!! Of YOU!!" and "Fine, I'll kill you later." 🙂 Also, the stuff on Vulcan is cool if you're a stone Vulcanophile like I am. If I could travel to any fictional planet anywhere, Vulcan, hands down. ("Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it's the first time I've been warm!")

  12. You know, I was enjoying your political analysis and then I hit this post and I may have developed a blog-crush (stalker alert!). Great list, full of both genre integrity and preferential quirks.Note: If you cast out ET as fantasy, I think you have to do the same with the entire Star Wars franchise — it's myth (long time ago, far far away) set within a titular SF backdrop. Just saying. The original "Day the Earth Stood Still" is my all time favorite. "The Devil in the Dark" is my all time favorite Star Trek episode — TOS rules! And notably missing from your list (or well, classic SF films that would be on my list):Them — giant ants. Enough said. Love the build up to the first giant ant appearance.Metropolis — C'mon. It's got C3Po's mother.Godzilla (original, please!)– I know, cheesy production values and don't look for a plot. But read as a cultural response to first-hand experience of nuclear devastation, it's amazing that they could turn such child-like play into a remarkably successful franchise. Am I alone in wanting to don the suit and stomp around a scale model of Tokyo? The Day of the Triffids — the book is much better than the film (doh!), but the film manages to keep some of the charm and creepiness of a deadly combination: ambulatory killer plants and a retina destroying meteor shower. Yes, the film ends with a stoopid save for humanity, though. The Angry Red Planet — absolute cheese-ball, B-movie favorite. And why? Pay attention to the opening frame — and then read the whole film (visual style and narrative) as filtered through a 1950's conception of female hysteria. The Birds — or is it horror because there's no explanation for the birds going all Al Qaeda? Brave is the film willing to leave central questions unanswered. And of this year's offerings? I am fascinated by the book-end epics, "District 9" and "Avatar." Apparently our zeitgeist is consumed with imperialism anxiety and fantasies of being "race" traitors.Sorry for the long comment. Promise I'm not the cyber-stalker I joked about being.

  13. Colossus: The Forbin Project is a true masterpiece that I could watch over again. I actually enjoyed the movie "Contact" but Sagan's book was better. As for "Terminatior: Salvation" I went to see it just cause my wife and kids were out of state seeing her uncle ad I did not want to stay at home alone. For me it was actually damn good although there were a couple of holes in the script that were never explained.

  14. thanks to all of you for commenting – i love science fiction, day of the triffids – forgot that one

  15. While I love Brazil and appreciate the campy fun that is Starship Troopers, I'm very glad to meet another member of the "I Hate E.T." club. I thought only my dad and I felt this way.I would put The Phantom Menace, Cloverfield and the Matrix sequels in the "completely sucks" category, as well as the nearly forgotten Reign of Fire from a few years back. For sci-fi TV series, I'm keen on Babylon 5 and Serenity. On the best sci-fi movie list, the original Matrix has to be near the top for me. I know you aren't keen on foreign films, but I would also rate the Korean monster movie The Host as one of the best I've ever seen. And I'll admit it. I've seen a lot.

  16. Great post… sorry, but '2001' changed my life as a kid, right after I read the novella… I just watched it again and enjoyed it even more. This movie opened my eyes to a world beyond the dreck of Catholicism and phony religious nonsense. Arthur C. Clark RULES.I wish someone would make a movie of Robert Heinlein's 'The Past Through Tomorrow', one of the best books/compilations I've ever read, but the scope, scale and intelligence would be lost on this 'Avatar' world.BTW, I too rooted for the aliens in 'Independence Day'… they were cool.
